1940's Green Bay Packers Game Worn Sideline Jacket. The sport of professional football wasn't built through the big cities like many would think. In the early stages, it played a distant second to college football as many thought the professional game was for ruffians or uneducated men. Plenty of teams were here and gone during the NFL's first ten years of existence. Most teams did not survive the financial crunch and became a distant memory. The Green Bay Packers have always found a way to survive against the much bigger cities it competes against. Whether it be local businesses banding together, a stock sale or another act of divine intervention, Green Bay continues to flourish. Packer game-worn articles are coveted among gridiron collectors. Most of the early jerseys and artifacts are in personal collections, at the Packer Hall of Fame or simply gone. The organization endured multiple fires through its one hundred years of existence which wiped out what might have been stored in reserve.

Heritage Auctions is proud to present this "Spun Sun" overcoat which was used during the 1940's. The offering was found at an estate sale in Madison. It is similar to the Arnie Herber 1930's jacket which resides in Canton. "Packers" is applied to the reverse in single-color yellow paint against the brown background. "27" is stenciled near the left sleeve end. We assume this was done as an inventory method. The collar has brown sheep skin type material to battle the elements. Moth holes are visible inside but the lining is mostly intact. A manufacturer's tag rests just below the hook in the collar. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
