    Description

1928 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Team Signed Football Attributed to Famous "Gipper Game" vs. Army & Original Game Program. We find the best in athletic competition when underdogs are inspired to reach deep and perform beyond expectations. Perhaps the greatest anecdote of such achievement belongs to the 1928 Notre Dame team, who heeded coach Knute Rockne's halftime call to "Win one for the Gipper," turning the tide against a dominating Army squad to claim victory for a fallen brother they never knew.

That Yankee Stadium upset victory over a powerful Army team remains one of the most famous contests in the long history of the collegiate game, the few relics to have survived the nine decades since that gritty battle on Babe Ruth's hallowed grounds highly coveted by educated collectors. The offered specimen may be the most significant ever to emerge from that event, ancient pigskin boldly autographed by the victorious underdogs that was almost certainly used during the game.

While we cannot state with complete assurance the latter claim, we can report that the ball--a Spalding Official Inter-Collegiate" model--is correct for competition, and that a "1928 Notre Dame vs. Army" notation just above the maker's mark is clearly decades old. Over forty bold black fountain pen ink signatures document that inspirational team, most notably the legendary and tragic coach Knute Rockne, as well as fellow College Football Hall of Famers Jack Cannon, Frank Carideo, Frank Leahy and Bert Metzger. Other notables include Tom Conley and Larry "Moon" Mullins.

The ball has lost a bit of air, as one would expect from a ball of such advanced age, and the original lacing is broken in two spots but to no significant aesthetic distraction. Unquestionably one of the greatest available treasures of the Golden Age gridiron.

Also included is the original game program. Very light handwriting at the upper margin of the cover suggests that the fan came back for the rematch the next year, recording the details of the 1929 contest. Otherwise, the program is unmarked, and a solid EX. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic.
