    Description

One of the very earliest NFL Championship awards known!

1924 Cleveland Bulldogs NFL Championship Watch Fob Presented to Tailback Harry "Hoge" Workman. An All-American quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes during his college years, Workman entered professional sports as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, making his debut at Fenway in relief against the New York Yankees on June 27, 1924. He'd face Bob Meusel as his first batter, who would single home Babe Ruth in a lopsided seventh inning. Just five weeks after his last Big League appearance, facing the Yankees in the Bronx, he'd trade his wool cap for a leather helmet to begin a World Championship season with a victory over George Halas' Chicago Bears.

The offered gold watch fob is the prize that awaited Workman at the other side of that historic 1924 Cleveland Bulldogs season, one of the very earliest pro football awards ever to reach the hobby's auction block. Workman would appear in all nine games en route to glory, starting eight of them, and supplying twenty-five of the Bulldogs' season tally of 228 points via extra point and field goal.

The fob features a miniature figural football affixed with a white enamel (some chipping) logo "C" and engraved with the celebratory text, "Cleveland Bulldogs, 1924 World Champions, Hoge Workman, Capt-Tailback." A twenty-link gold chain remains affixed. Total weight is ten grams (10 g.). Fine condition. Letter of provenance from great grandson of Harry "Hoge" Workman.
