1975-77 Walter Payton Game Worn Chicago Bears Rookie Era Helmet - Kindler Collection. In the ever changing world of the sports memorabilia hobby, one thing always seems to remain constant - high-end memorabilia representing "firsts" and "lasts" are always near the top of discerning collectors' want lists. Presented here is quite possibly the first Chicago Bears helmet ever worn by All-World running back Walter Payton, and it originates from the collection of famed hobbyist John Kindler.When examining a helmet of this caliber it should be highly scrutinized, but to our delight, everything simply checks out. The correct Wilson F2002 7 3/8-7 1/3 shell (U.S. Pat No. 2634415 GT") is the exact style Payton wore during the first three years of his career, but it is the interior that tells the tail on this gridiron treasure. Properly markered "34 Back Op" crown donut remains, and you can still see remnants of the red duct tape, which presumably bared his No. 34, above the right ear hole. Facemask is detached from the clips, and it is Payton's typical "red dot" style.
All-in-all, there is no definitive proof possible when attempting to authenticate a helmet of this ilk with the void of a photomatch, but due to the fact that it was obtained by super-collector John Kindler in the early 1980s and that the specs check out perfectly, we believe with high probability that this fine piece was worn by Walter Payton during the first few years of his storied career.
