1953 Bobby Layne Game Worn Detroit Lions Helmet. Offered here is a terrific and rock-solid game-worn helmet used by Hall of Famer Bobby Layne during the Detroit Lions' 1953 NFL Championship season. A five-time Pro Bowl quarterback and NFL 1950's All-Decade Team member, Layne is widely remembered for wearing this generic-style early 1950's Riddell suspension shell during his days in the "Motor City." It is the "RT" model, which utilized tenite clear plastic with a unique painting process. As is classically correct, the helmet was painted gold from the inside, while battleship grey color visibly covers the entire inside of the shell. The team's silver stripe, which was used for 12 of 13 Lions regular season games, including the 1953 Championship game is positioned at the center. Proper 1" "22" decals are displayed at the rear, which is an exact match to the Doak Walker helmet that is on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Also matching the Walker, this helmet shows identical greenish degradation to the shell, which is a result of the gold paint used being not pure and containing copper pigments that turned green. Helmet is a size 7 1/4, an identical match to the Layne Steelers helmet that resides in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Also, there are multiple images of various Lions players from that season using the exact same style helmet as the offered specimen. In closing, what we have here is one of the earliest documented helmets of a Hall of Famer ever offered publicly and this is unquestionably a highly significant piece of NFL history from the league's formative golden years.
