Early 1930's Green Bay Packers - Frankford Yellow Jackets Archive with Signed Documents from Calhoun & Joannes. Early and highly significant Green Bay Packers archive offers a rare glimpse into the adolescence of the franchise and the NFL at large, recalling a time when most professional football teams teetered on the brink of insolvency.

    1) Circa 1930 typed letter on the letterhead of a New York City hotel referencing the Frankford Yellow Jackets and Curly Lambeau, signed in pencil by George Whitney Calhoun, a local newspaper man who cofounded the Packers with Lambeau, and one of the toughest signatures of all iconic Green Bay pioneers. "Cal" is unquestionably as much responsible for the creation of an NFL football team in Green Bay as Lambeau. In addition, Cal is credited as the first manager of Indian Packing Co. football team, first publicity director 1919-1947, sports editor of the Green Bay Press Gazette and widely promoting the Packers in newspaper, named the team "PACKERS" and even was in charge of passing the hat before the team charged admission. Page has minor separation at edges of mailing folds and a mathematical calculation at bottom. Autograph rates 8/10. Dimensions 10x7".

    2) 1931 typed letter on Green Bay Football Corporation letterhead discussing receipts for games against the Frankford/Philadelphia Yellow Jackets signed in ink by Lee Joannes (Hungry Five member!). Bidders may want to note that the Packers, New York Giants and Chicago Bears were all involved in lawsuit to recover money from Frankford (suburb of Philadelphia) when they folded in the middle of 1931 NFL season. Page exhibits original mailing folds and paper clip imprint but not flaws of significance. Signature rates 9/10. Dimensions 11x8.5".

    3) 1931 handwritten receipt confirming payment from the Packers for the October 18, 1931 visit from the Yellow Jackets, signed by that team's head coach and player Russell "Bull" Behman. Paper clip imprint, otherwise no flaws of note. All ink rates 9/10. Dimensions 3.5x7".

    4) 1930 promissory note regarding another financial transaction between the Packers and the Yellow Jackets. Handwriting and signatures are from minor figures with the latter, and PSA/DNA has declined to render an opinion on this document due to lack of exemplars. General handling and storage wear with paper clip imprint and rough right edge. All text rates 9/10. Dimensions 3.5x8". Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
