Circa 1950 George Halas Presentational Chicago Staleys/Bears Tie Bar. Though the inaugural class Pro Football Hall of Famer's name is synonymous with the Chicago Bears, and his initials still boldly worn on every jersey's sleeve to this day, it was with a team named the Staleys with which Halas made his professional debut. He had been named MVP of the Navy team in their seventeen to nothing victory over the Marines in the 1919 Rose Bowl just weeks after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles to end World War I, and his team was awarded honorable discharges for the accomplishment, freeing Halas up to pioneer the professional game.

This gorgeous creation commemorates the earliest days of Halas' pro career, apparently presented to him at a reunion event some decades later, though the exact history of the piece has been buried beneath the sands of time. The fourteen-karat gold tie bar is the creation of renowned jeweler Harry Winston, best remembered for gifting the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian Museum. A figural football attached to the tie bar holds a small real diamond at center, and is engraved, "Staley Bears, 1920-1922." On verso, "G. Halas" is engraved in attribution to the team's founder. The tie bar is in perfect condition, and housed in its original box with a golden embossed "G. Halas" on the hinged lid.

Our approximation of vintage is an educated guess based upon design, but the founding of the Harry Winston company in the early 1930's assures that this is a commemorative piece rather than a period presentation. Regardless, the appeal of a relic linking Halas to the infancy of the NFL should be evident to even the casual gridiron historian.
