1982 Walter Payton 10,000 Yards Gained Presentational Game Football. The 10,000 Yard Club became a quartet the day this historic pigskin saw Orange County action, adding Sweetness to an elite rushing ensemble comprised of Jim Brown, OJ Simpson and Franco Harris. It was a slightly belated Christmas gift to Windy City football fans, who crowded around television sets to watch Payton carry for over one hundred yards (and receive another triple-digit tally) in a thirty-seven to twenty-six victory over the hosting Los Angeles Rams on December 26, 1982.While Emmitt Smith, the man who ultimately displaced Payton from the top spot on the career rushing totem pole, released dozens of milestone game balls to the collecting hobby, this is the very first example from the Chicago Bears legend we have ever encountered. It comes to us from the family of James Sheerin, Senior Vice President of HIlton Hotels at the Palmer House in Chicago. His relationship with the Hall of Fame running back was both a close friendship and a business mentorship documented in a number of Chicago-area newspapers (links available at our online listing). A pair of 8x10" photos of Payton and Sheerin together will be supplied to the winning bidder as well.
Eighteen years after his tragic, early passing, Walter Payton lives on through his legacy of philanthropy and humanitarianism, his name appearing on the NFL Man of the Year Award presented annually to the player with the most impressive combination of achievement on the field, and service off of it.
