1962 Packers vs. Bears Team Signed, Game Used Football - Presented to Fuzzy Thurston. Team-signed footballs of the storied Green Bay Packers teams of the 1960's have become some of the most desired collectibles from the gridiron. Amazingly, this offering even takes it up a to another level. Offered here is former Packers great Fuzzy Thurston's presentational game ball for his superior performance during the November 4, 1962 meeting with the Chicago Bears. Originating from what most experts call Vince Lombardi's most successful squad, the Packers manhandled their biggest rival, by a staggering score of 38-7 and Thurston undoubtedly had an instrumental part in numerous Packers' sweeps during the contest that produced this hobby treasure. Exhibiting a nice amount of game use, this "Thorp Sporting Goods, The Duke, Wilson" football features the Packers typical presentational paint, which shows medium cracking from years of display, presumably at the Thurston home. Paint notations read: "Packers - 38, Nov. 4, 1962, Bears - 7," Fuzzy Thurston, Green Bay Chicago, Game Ball." In addition, this ball has been signed by the 1962 Packers team. Brown panel includes signatures of the coaches: Vince Lombardi (superb exemplar), Phil Bengston, Red Cochran and others. The painted panel includes the following notables: Ron Kostelnik, Willie Wood, Willie Davis, Herb Adderly, Max McGee, Fuzzy Thurston, Hank Gremminger, Bart Starr, Bob Skoronski, Tom Moore, Boyd Dowler, Bill Forester, Henry Jordan, Jim Taylor and others. One of two Thurston presentational balls offered in this auction, and possibly the only two he was awarded during his fabled career with the "Green and Gold." The Frederick "Fuzzy" Thurston Collection.
One of the most beloved Green Bay Packer players in history, Frederick "Fuzzy" Thurston played a significant role in helping make coach Vince Lombardi's famed sweep one of the most dominant plays of the 1960's. Along with fellow offensive line teammates Forrest Gregg and Jerry Kramer, Thurston utilized Lombardi's methods of paying close attention to the smallest of details, in addition to focusing on the extreme importance of superior physical conditioning, in order to help propel his "Titletown" squad into one of the most recognized dynasties in the history of the National Football League.
The lots offered within this auction represent an impressive selection of the most significant pieces once owned by the two-time All-Pro, who is also one of only three players in League history to have been a part of six World Championship teams.
