A League and a Franchise are Born!

1960 Oakland Raiders First Game Used Football in Franchise History. When team owner Max Winter announced in November 1959 that his Minnesota squad was ditching its commitment to join the upstart American Football League in order to become the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL, a Bay-area real estate developer named Chet Soda stepped forth with plans for a team called the Oakland Señores. A bit of legal wrangling and a name change later, the Oakland Raiders officially became the eighth and final member of the AFL on January 30, 1960. Football history was forever changed.

Just six months later, at Kezar Stadium in the southeastern corner of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, the infant franchise engaged in its first gridiron battle, a July 31, 1960 preseason meeting with the Dallas Texans. Here we present the most significant relic ever to surface from that historic contest, an Official AFL (Joe Foss) football used in the game and autographed immediately afterwards by the full Raiders roster.

The ball derives from the personal collection of George Anderson, longtime trainer for the Raiders through the entirety of their AFL years and even into their NFL integration. Anderson's signed letter of provenance attends the battle-scarred pigskin, bearing a hand-markered notation reading "Won 0, Lost 1, 1960, Oakland 13 - Dallas 20, Kezar Stadium, SF." Over thirty-five black ballpoint ink autographs adorn the surface, notably future Hall of Famer Jim Otto, Babe Parilli, Tom Flores, Billy Lott and more. The autographs average a technical 7/10, but the imperfect contrast makes legibility more difficult. The team signed aspect, of course, is secondary to the inaugural game use, and serves more as a form of provenance than fodder for the autograph collector. The Raiders have long been famous for the intense, occasionally dangerous, fervor of its fanbase--let's see which member is left standing when the hammer falls on this key treasure. Letter of provenance from Raiders trainer. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
