Photomatched to shutout victory over the Los Angeles Rams!

1978 Tony Dorsett NFC Championship Game Worn Dallas Cowboys Jersey. Before the great Emmitt Smith rewrote the NFL record books clad in Cowboys garb, there was a single name associated with the Dallas ground game, another first round pick for the franchise who rushed his way to Canton with a Lone Star on his helmet. For a dozen seasons, beginning with his 1977 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Super Bowl Champion campaign, Tony Dorsett served as one of the key figures of an unprecedented age of dominance in Dallas. Presented is one of the most significant relics to emerge from his early career.

This sophomore season jersey exhibits stellar wear from a year punctuated by 1,703 yards from scrimmage including nine regular season touchdowns. But Dorsett's performance in the 1978 NFC Championship game--101 yards and a touchdown on only seventeen carries in a twenty-eight to nothing shutout of the hosting Los Angeles Rams--remains his most noteworthy stat line of the year.

This is the jersey he was wearing during that dominating contest, a garment that remains unchanged from its appearance in that masterful performance, thus allowing a number of photo matches by virtue of hit marks in the shoulder area. We should stress that the three-point deduction in MEARS scoring that accounts for the listed grade is due to a team-instituted nameplate change executed prior to Dorsett's ownership. The jersey was originally issued to kicker Mac Percival, who wore number "33" in 1974 but appeared in just three games before six misses in eight field goal attempts brought a swift end to his days in Dallas. So while the MEARS rulebook requires the deduction as a technicality, it is our contention that the garment is a perfect ten as a Dorsett representation, as no alterations date subsequent to his wear.

The design is simple and classic, with double-threes on chest, back and shoulders, and a white on faded blue nameplate on back reading "Dorsett" in three-inch block lettering. Interior collar holds the Texan manufacturer's "Southland Athletic Mfg. Co." label with a size "48" identifier, the former exhibiting heavy wear for shoulder pad abrasion. Certainly one of the finest Cowboys jerseys to emerge from perhaps the most enchanted era in franchise history. LOA from MEARS, A7. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
