    1972 Jim Thorpe Memorial Trophy (NFL Player of the Year) Trophy Presented to Larry Brown. Starting in 1955, the Newspaper Enterprise Association, under the guidance of famed sports cartoonist Murray Olderman, began awarding the NFL's MVP with their organization's "Jim Thorpe Trophy". One of the most significant individual awards in the league each year, the Thorpe Trophy was presented to Larry Brown in 1972. Standing at an impressive 34", it features an engraved plaque on the base, which reads: "Larry Brown Washington Redskins Professional Football Player of the Year 1972 Selected by the Newspaper Enterprise Association Jim Thorpe Memorial Trophy".
