1970-71 Merlin Olsen Game Worn Los Angeles Rams Jersey from The John Kindler Collection. Merlin Olsen is in the first tier of all-time gridiron greats. He is one of those special players that you could pluck out of the 1960's, put him on an NFL field today, and he would thrive. Yes, he was that good.

His football resume is staggering: two First-Team All-America selections, an Outland Trophy winner, NFL Rookie of the Year, fourteen Pro Bowl berths, member of the NFL's 60's and 70's All-Decade Teams, 75th and 100th Anniversary Teams, and the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. Oh yes, and he was a member of the Rams' Fearsome Foursome, the best defensive line ever.

A cerebral athlete whose skill set went way beyond the gridiron, Olsen earned degrees in finance, economics, and business; appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, including starring in his own TV drama series; and was a respected broadcaster for two decades. No one had to fix Merlin Olsen's grades in college or take his tests for him.

The most fascinating aspect of Merlin may very well have been the discectomy between madman and eloquent egghead. After fifteen years of crushing quarterbacks like a nutcracker and flattening ball carriers, Merlin became the FTD Florists' spokesperson and Father Murphy!

Merlin's stunning gamer presented here is a heavy blue cotton knit with white applique numerals and sleeve stripes, sewn-on "Olsen" on verso nameplate, and "Russell Sothern 54" label in the tail. Exhibits solid wear to the front jersey body and upper back near the plate, despite the fact the Rams only wore blue three-four times per season.

Best of all may be the unique circumstances surrounding the nameplate change. The jersey was worn by Merlin for two seasons, first in 1970 with "Olsen" on the back, and then in 1971 with "M. Olsen" on the verso, after his brother Phil joined the team. After the 1970 season, the Rams changed Merlin's plate to read "M. Olsen" and his brother's read "P. Olsen." An incredibly unique and classic jersey from a timeless football icon. Letter of provenance from Ian Kindler. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
