1969 Gene Washington Game Worn Minnesota Vikings Jersey Attributed to 1970 NFL Championship Game. A two-time First Team All-American at Michigan State, wide receiver Gene Washington was the eighth overall pick of the 1967 NFL Draft, and played in two Pro Bowls during his seven-year pro career. Later, in 2010, he was selected as one of the 50 Greatest Vikings.

The jersey offered here dates from Washington's greatest season in 1969, when his thirty-nine catches for 821 yards, 21.1 yards per catch, and nine touchdowns earned him All-Pro recognition.

The home purple lightweight cotton knit sports "84" screened-on the front, back, and sleeves in white and yellow heat transfer. This distinctive numeral font can be best described as "balloonish," and the ribbed cotton collar and sleeve cuffs show professional model features. The "King-O'Shea...46" label in the tail dates from the 1963-70 era, and the left shoulder exhibits remnants (outline and threads) of where the NFL's 5oth Anniversary patch once sat.

The Vikings wore this lightweight style in the mid- to late-60's for predominantly pre-season and warm-weather games. This exemplar shows definite game use and was most likely worn for the final time in the 1970 NFL Championship Game versus the Browns at Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota. (Note: Washington would have also worn thermal undergarments for that contest). In that game, Washington was at his best, recording three receptions for 120 yards, including a seventy-five-yard touchdown reception. For the style match, see Getty Images 452279618.
