Massive game use from the 2013 Hall of Fame inductee!

1967-69 Dave Robinson Game Worn Green Bay Packers Helmet--Photo Matched!

UPDATE: This helmet has been photo matched to a 1969 photograph (signed), which is also included in this lot.

He was the twelfth man from Vince Lombardi's Championship teams, including the legendary coach himself, to earn bronze immortality at Canton, the Pack's first selection in the 1963 NFL draft. He had played both ways under another coaching icon, Joe Paterno, during his collegiate years at Penn State, but he'd rise to professional fame as part of one of the greatest linebacker cores in history along with fellow Hall of Famer Ray Nitschke and Pro Bowler Lee Roy Caffey. Most football historians credit Robinson with rescuing Green Bay's 1966 NFL Championship hopes when his late-game pressure of Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith precipitated an interception in the Packers end zone to preserve the 34-27 victory.

This rare Russell "Husky RK4" format dates to the years immediately following that heroic goal line stand, with the plentiful, multi-colored battle scars and triple reconditioning stamping (on rear shell) to indicate a long and productive partnership with its owner. Iconoclastic exterior styling featuring bold two colored G's and a stenciled "89" straddling the lower back striping herald Packer 60's dominance.
Robinson's name appears three times at interior, where a fascinating combination of twelve-point suspension, customized leather headband, and green foam concussion padding provided the best available protection of the era. Size "7 3/4" is stamped at lower rear neck webbing, and leather jaw pads as well as original chinstrap remain intact. As is all but certain in helmets from this era, the original clips have become brittle with age and snapped, but the original open eyed cage face mask remains. In short, as complete as it gets.

Crown donut padding is loose and shriveled, but remains present, and bears a handwritten notation dated "Jan. 12, 1970," telling us that the helmet transitioned from gear to memorabilia in the week prior to the 1970 Pro Bowl, entering the collection of a noted early hobbyist. A spectacular representation from the 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
