    Description

1930's Football Helmet, Pads and Pants Attributed to Benny Friedman - Once on Display in Giants Legacy Club! Widely considered the first great passer of professional football, Benny Friedman played his college ball at Michigan, where he led the Wolverines to consecutive 7-1 seasons, in 1925 and 1926. In 1927, Friedman joined the Cleveland Bulldogs of the NFL, and after his successful rookie season, he had a spectacular year with the Detroit Wolverines, where he led the league in passing touchdowns, rushing touchdowns and scoring. Friedman's performance that season was so impressive that Giants owner Tim Mara bought the Wolverines just so he could have the rights to Friedman.

Presented here is a pair of football pants, waist pads and leather helmet that we attribute to Benny Friedman. Originally sourced from well-known game-worn memorabilia collector Jock Smith, who obtained the set from a family member of a Michigan alumni who attended school with Friedman, it was once featured in the New York Giants' Legacy Club at MetLife Stadium.

Highlighted by a well-worn leather helmet, it has "Airlite" stamped in the interior, with "[size] 7" and "316" noted in the interior (we are unsure of what the later stands for). Also includes is a size 38 pair of Spalding waist pads and Spalding pants, each which show solid wear.

A true Holy Grail offering, featuring one of the most notable football players of his era, rivaled only by the great Red Grange and Jim Thorpe. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
