Description
1933 Sport Kings Jim Thorpe #6 PSA Mint 9. Though Thorpe's exploits on the gridiron have become the stuff of folklore, making it impossible to calculate the ratio of fact to exaggeration, there is no question that he was the most talented football star of his age. The stories of his halftime drop kick field goals from the fifty yard line to entertain the fans may not be gospel, but his three World Championships with the Canton Bulldogs certainly are, and when the National Football League was founded in 1920, it was Thorpe who was chosen League president by the charter members.Parallels could accurately be drawn between Thorpe and his iconic baseball contemporary Babe Ruth, each a "diamond in the rough," emerging from the reservation and the orphanage respectively, to establish themselves as the greatest talents (and gate attractions) of their day. Certainly the decision to include Thorpe in an issue focused upon a theme of elite excellence from the world of sport had been an easy one to make, the iconic Native American superstar one of three gridiron representatives honored by Sport Kings, along with Red Grange and Knute Rockne.
Graded PSA Mint 9. The offered example of this near-pristine Sport Kings card distinguishes itself as a member of an elite club--one of only four representations earning the highest rating ever assigned by PSA. Less than one percent of the 11,000+ examples from the entirety of the forty-eight card issue have matched this level of excellence, with only four cards making the leap to Gem Mint 10 status. As the top examples of the hobby's most recognizable cards continue to soar in value, there's every reason to believe that this truly spectacular example thereof will enjoy a similar surge in the years to come.
