1925 Star Player Candy Red Grange SGC 20 Fair 1.5 - Only Two SGC/PSA Graded Examples!
Football card enthusiasts have a far more limited number of choices over baseball fans when it comes to collecting vintage pre-1948 cards. One of the rarest promotions is one from 1925 produced for the brand "Star Player Candy" that we have learned decades after issue were a product of Dockman & Sons. This auction features six very rare examples. Offered is the key to the series - Red Grange from Illinois. Grange was destined for greatness. He scored three touchdowns in his very first college game. His sophomore year was an undefeated season for Illinois and the Helms Athletic Foundation national championship. His legend was born on October 18, 1924 vs. Michigan, the first game played at Memorial Stadium (a memorial to alumni who had served in World War I). Grange took the opening kickoff 95-yards for a touchdown. He would rack up three more TDs in just the first 12 minutes of the game ending with six touchdowns. Illinois won 39-14. Michigan coach Fielding Yost said, "All Grange can do is run." Illinois coach Bob Zuppke, replied, "And all Galli-Curci can do is sing." in reference to a famous opera star of the era. He was the most influential gridiron star of football's early years, Red Grange helped legitimize the National Football League when he signed with the Chicago Bears in 1925. This is certainly one of his rarest if not his rarest card collectible. We have been unable to find an instance of this card being offered at auction. Graded SGC 20 Fair 1.5. This is one of just two entries found on the SGC census. PSA has yet to grade a single card from this elusive edition.
