1888 N162 Goodwin "Champions" Henry Beecher SGC 35 Good+ 2.5 - The First Football Card. American football at the college level was growing in popularity in the 1880's. The N162 Goodwin "Champion" series features among the fifty subjects the very first tobacco insert card honoring an American football player. The athlete receiving the honor was the captain of Yale's team - Henry Beecher. The Yale Bulldogs lived up to their name for fist year coach Walter Camp by going 13-0 in 1888 and were retroactively named National Champions by five different selection organizations. Graded SGC 35 Good+ 2.5. There is one speck of surface in the left border and a scrap along a short segment of the top. The reverse shows some roughness at two edges but colors are rich and saturated, borders are clean and white. A very attractive card for the grade level.
