Description

1999 Donruss Elite Walter Payton & Barry Sanders (Passing the Torch-Autographs) #4 PSA Gem Mint 10 - #12/1,500. "I'm very competitive when it comes to winning and losing and playing well," Sanders once explained. "And I did put up big numbers. There were some times in 1997 when I could have gone back in to pad my numbers, but I wasn't as competitive with the numbers as I was about winning and losing."

Few could believe it when the man who many consider the most gifted running back ever to wear an NFL uniform hung up his cleats just 1,500 yards short of Walter Payton's career rushing record, but Barry Sanders didn't need that title to prove anything. All he needed were his highlight films, which provide evidence of both his outrageous elusiveness to break through the line and the blazing speed to leave the secondary in the dust once he had a full head of steam.

The listed card was issued during the first year of Sanders' retirement, quite possibly designed before his late July 1999 announcement that he wasn't coming back. The obverse pictures the legendary Chicago Bear he chased and then let free, signed in 10/10 black sharpie by Sweetness. Verso finds Sanders signing with equal strength above the embossed limited edition numbers of "0012/1500."

But, of those fifteen hundred cards, none surpasses this specimen for condition, which earns every point of its PSA Gem Mint 10 rating from the hobby's premier card grading service. Population six!
