1965 Topps Joe Namath Rookie #122 PSA NM-MT 8--Only Five Superior! In January 1969, as the brash talking, 25-year-old quarterback of the New York Jets, Joe Namath guaranteed victory for his upstart team in Super Bowl III. It sounded arrogant at the time as the AFL Champion Jets went into the game as 18-point underdogs to the NFL Champion Baltimore Colts, but Namath backed up his words by leading his team to a 16-7 win. His performance was not as jaw-dropping as much as it was efficient, completing 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and no touchdowns. But it was enough to cement his legacy in the annals of NFL history.

This 1965 Topps rookie card of "Broadway Joe" Namath shows an even younger Namath during a somewhat precarious time in his career. As it turns out, the photo shoot for this card actually took place in the hallway of Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York, where Namath was recovering from knee surgery. As the story goes, he was pulled out of bed on crutches, handed his jersey, shoulder pads and a football, and told to pose for the Jets team photographer, Bob Olen. The image is now an indelible piece of hobby history as Namath not only delivered the Jets their only Super Bowl victory in history, but went on to fame, fortune and enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Namath's #122 RC in the 1965 Topps series is the crown jewel of the release. Although other key rookies like Fred Biletnikoff, Willie Brown and Ben Davidson are included, it's Namath's card that draws the most attention. With its vivid colors and "Tallboy" specs (2-1/2" x 4-11/16"), the '65 set is admired and revered by collectors young and old, and Broadway Joe's issue is always the key conversation piece. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Just five have graded higher!
