Description

1965 Topps Joe Namath #122 PSA NM+ 7.5. Joe Namath was an American original. The young man from Pennsylvania, who spoke with an Alabama accent, came into New York City almost announcing, "The modest 1950's are long done; time to leap into the 1960's." Namath was a star quarterback at Alabama (where he developed his passing skills, his ability to attract beautiful coeds, and his drawl). Instead of a team owner trying to contain Broadway Joe's more flamboyant social tendencies, Werblin, an experienced entertainment mogul, encouraged Namath to party publicly in all the city hotspots, as Werblin knew the value of the attendant publicity. Namath was serious about football though, and he was named the AFL's Rookie of the Year in '65. Namath's shinning hour was Super Bowl III in January of 1969. The first two Super Bowls were won in blowouts by the NFL's Green Bay Packers, and the Jets were 19-point underdogs to the Baltimore Colts. Three nights before the game, Namath's Jets chances were being razzed by an attendee at a sports dinner in Miami, site of Super Bowl III. Namath extemporaneously replied, "I've got news for you. We're gonna win the game. I guarantee it." Broadway Joe was right. Namath had 207 yards passing and earned the game MVP, and the Jets stunned the world with their 16-7 win. Namath was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

Graded PSA NM+ 7.5. Namath's valuable rookie card is large, approximately 2-1/2" by 4-11/16". It's a visually pleasing, colorful vertical showing a youthful Namath at the start of his pro career. It's a prize in any collection.
