Description

The most essential post-war football rookie!

1958 Topps Jim Brown #62 Rookie SGC NM-MT 8. "Make sure when anyone tackles you he remembers how much it hurts," Brown once advised fellow Syracuse alumnus John Mackey. The legendary running back might not have been the most elusive rusher who ever suited up in the NFL, but he was famous for being the toughest to bring to the ground, his bone-rattling style averaging an outrageous 5.2 yards per carry. He claimed the NFL rushing title in all but one of his nine seasons in the League, and his 1,863 rushing yards in 1963 remains a Cleveland Browns record, the oldest franchise rushing record of all thirty-two teams.

Brown was the sixth selection in the 1957 NFL draft, but it wasn't until 1958 that the Topps company officially welcomed the iconic running back to the league, allowing for a celebration of Brown's Rookie of the Year honor in text on verso. This is a particularly tough card to locate in elite condition, but the common flaws with registration and centering are absent here, supplying eye-appeal that surpasses its already lofty assessment. We suspect that a micro enamel chip to the reverse lower left corner is all that restricts its elevation to the top tier of the SGC grading ladder along with seven other NM-MT+ 8.5 examples. This one is virtually as pretty as the PSA Mint 9 examples that Heritage has sold for prices in excess of $300,000 in the past five years.
