Description

1957 Topps John Unitas #138 SGC 96 Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher. Few questions inflame the most passionate gridiron fans like, who is the best to ever play quarterback in the NFL? There will be many responses, all of which are sure to draw criticism but the name Johnny Unitas will certainly lead to a silent introspective pause. It was in 1958 that QB Johnny Unitas would lead the Colts in "The Greatest Game Ever Played." It was an historic meeting of the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants to establish N.F.L. supremacy. It was a game that had lead changes, turnovers, a game-saving goal line stand, a game-tying last minute field goal. "When the game ended in a tie," Unitas remembered, "we were standing on the sidelines waiting to see what came next. Suddenly officials came over and said, 'Send the captain out. We're going to flip a coin to see who will receive.' That was the first we heard of the overtime period."

Graded SGC 96 Mint 9. One of just three graded Mint by SGC with none rated higher. Cards issued during his career are highly sought after, none more so than card #138 from the 1957 Topps football edition. While he shares the set with the rookie cards of HoFers Paul Hornung and Bart Starr, Unitas has sprinted out front as the most admired and most valuable. A world class example befitting a world class football legend. We all have come to realize SGC has a tendency to be conservative with grades for key cards so just think how much more impressive the card will be in your hands compared to an online image.
