Description

1957 Topps John Unitas #138 PSA NM-MT 8. Johnny Unitas always had confidence in himself, even when others didn't. After a standout high school career in his native Pittsburgh, Unitas had a tryout at Notre Dame, and Fighting Irish Coach Frank Leahy rejected Unitas, saying, "You're too skinny. You'll get killed out there." After playing at Louisville, Unitas was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1955, then cut before playing in any games. He made the Baltimore Colts in 1956, and in '57 became the Colts full-time starting QB, and led the NFL in TD passes (24) and passing yards (2,550). Unitas quarterbacked the Colts in 1958 in what has been called The Greatest Football Game ever played, when Baltimore defeated the New York Giants 23-17 in the NFL's first sudden death game for the league championship, a game nationally televised by NBC that vaulted pro football into national prominence. Offered is his 1957 Topps rookie card. Graded PSA NM-MT 8.
