Description

1911 M116 Sporting Life Ed Summers (Black Back) PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop Four, None Higher. "The Sporting Life" newspaper hit the newsstands each week starting in 1883. Their declared mission was a focus on baseball, trap shooting and general sports. Their main competition was "The Sporting News" (TSN) which debuted in 1886. The year 1908, saw "Baseball Magazine" hit the stands and they were out of business in 1917. Both Baseball magazine and TSN peppered issues with supplements featuring players in action versus the high-end and formal portraits that were the hallmark of Sporting Life premium cabinet cards, the W600s. Large and comprehensive, the set offers 287 cards which were offered to readers in 24 different series of 12 cards each. That number jumps to 400 cards including all variations for the master set builder. Despite being one of the largest sets of the pre-war era, M116s are not rare but not all that easy either compared to tobacco sets of the same time frame. The series lacks bright colorful skies and landscapes as backdrops while focusing on up-close player portraits with subtle color tints creating a lineup of very elegant portraits allowing for the inner personality of each baseball hero to be conveyed.

Issued in series Three. Our offered card features Ed Summers with the Detroit Tigers. Graded PSA NM-MT 8 with a traditional pastel background. The revers ad is printed in black. Total PSA population is only twenty-one. This is one of only four cards graded NM-MT with none rated higher!
