Description

1978 Muhammad Ali Headgear Used in Training for Ali-Spinks II Fight. After Ali defeated George Foreman in 1974 to regain the title, he had ten successful title defenses versus ten different opponents. However, in early 1978, he was taken by surprise by a young Leon Spinks who shocked the boxing world with split decision to wrest the crown from his head. A rematch was quickly set for later in the year. That bout, in September of 1978, was Ali's last great fight. Despite being thirty-six, he was somehow able to defy the odds and his critics to once again rise to the occasion and capture the Heavyweight Champion of the World for an unprecedented third time.

Ali trained hard for The Battle of New Orleans, determined to win back the title he craved so dearly. The protective headgear offered here was worn by him for many hours during his training for that fight. It has a black leather exterior, white leather interior, buckle chin strap, and leather lacing in the rear. A large, rectangular, white manufacturer's tag at the front with black lettering reads "Everlast. Made in USA. Made Expressly For Muhammad Ali." The piece shows heavy wear. LOA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from Craig Hamilton.
