    Description

A reinstated former champion begins his climb back to the mountain top...

1970 Muhammad Ali Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman. One was the greatest Heavyweight Champion ever to step through the ring ropes. The other was the most famous artist in America, and unquestionably the most revered painter in the history of sports art. Each was an unrepentant iconoclast, groundbreaking, unparalleled in his chosen field of endeavor, a great American success story serving as inspiration to millions. Together they created some of the most enduring sporting images in our shared aesthetic history.

We find the pair together again here after more than three and a half years of Ali's absence from the prize ring, the Heavyweight Champion stripped of his title and his livelihood as punishment for his refusal upon religious grounds to participate in the Vietnam War draft. Ali would fight twice in 1970 before his failed attempt to reclaim his belt from Joe Frazier in March of 1971, so the offered image derives from training for either the Jerry Quarry or Oscar Bonavena bouts in October and December of 1970, respectively.

The watercolor, Conté crayon and black ink creation is an elegant portrait of the sport's greatest figure, filling the top half of the 12x9" paper above various handwritten slogans and a signature from Neiman. The work exhibits minimal toning at the edges and a few slight bends but nothing that in any way distracts the eye. The museum-quality framing amplifies the outstanding aesthetics and completes the dimensions at 24x19". Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
