1960 Hemmets Journal Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) Rookie #23 PSA NM-MT 8. A Gold Medal in the Light Heavyweight division of the 1960 Rome Olympics transformed this eighteen year-old phenom from local Louisville hero into the sport's top contender, setting course for a 1964 meeting with Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston and the first of three title belts. But the man who would become the most famous and revered figure in the history of the prize ring was a virtual unknown when a small Swedish press produced a delicate assembly of trading cards, an issue virtually doomed from the start by its production on thin, glossy paper rather than the standard cardboard stock to which collectors are accustomed. Add in a highly limited production run and an Atlantic Ocean and six decades between its birth and its present location, and we can begin to understand why this is one of just thirteen at its lofty PSA assessment, with only thirteen grading higher.

For those collectors seeking some form of context by which to calculate their bids, we should look to the only American athlete of the post-war era who has commanded such global acclaim, Michael Jordan. At each level of the PSA rating scale, the legendary 1986 Fleer Jordan rookie is literally hundreds of times as common. Add to those calculations the fact that there are no other Clay/Ali rookie cards, while both Nike and Star Company have issued Jordan rookies, and the supreme rarity of this offering becomes even clearer. This is an investment-grade trading card of supreme relevance and desirability.
