1950's Cassius Clay Training Bag Gloves Used as Amateur in Golden Gloves - One of Earliest Known. Cassius Clay first took up boxing at the tender age of 12 in response to his bicycle being stolen. Eventually, the boxer dominated at the Golden Gloves level which then turned into Olympic success in 1960. Ali's professional career rivaled that of any boxer who climbed into the squared circle. These "Post Golden Gloves" were used by a young Clay in the 1950's. The gloves were originally part of the Columbia Street Gym Collection in Louisville, Kentucky. Joe Martin, the police officer who introduced the youngster to boxing, also ran the gym. They remained with the gym until its closing in the mid '60's.

"Post Golden Gloves New York" is applied to the wrist of both leather gloves. White elastic straps are affixed on the palms. "CC" was written in black marker on the inside for identification purposes. Both gloves show the expected wear and tear from hitting the training bag countless times. Clay honed his skill while wearing these gloves, possibly the earliest known relics from his career. Three letters of provenance will be forwarded to the winning bidder. Longtime Ali collector Pete Morkovin signed a letter as did boxing expert Craig Hamilton of JO Sports. owner Martin Mednick provided an appraisal value of $35,000 on these historic artifacts for the trifecta. LOA from Craig Hamilton/JO Sports. LOA from Martin Mednick. LOA from Pete Morkovin. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
