Description

1937 Jim Braddock vs. Max Schmeling On-Site Boxing Poster--Only Known Example! It was a fight that never happened, but the enormous controversy and intrigue that surrounded the cancellation has ensured that, even in non-existence, the pairing looms large in pre-war boxing history. The theories regarding the reason this bout was rendered moot center around two themes. Some believe that fear of a probable Schmeling victory over the unlikely Champion compelled the American boxing hierarchy to squelch the match, concerned that Hitler would deny other Americans from competing for the belt in the future. Others think that money was at the root, and that the far greater purse that a Louis fight would bring Braddock accounted for the change.

Braddock would meet Louis on June 22nd, less than three weeks after the date listed on this poster, losing in an eighth-round knockout at Chicago's Comiskey Park. This gorgeous 28x41" Braddock vs. Schmeling poster is believed to be the only surviving example, deriving from the estate of Schmeling's cornerman Max Machon, whose family likewise consigned the 1938 Schmeling/Louis poster in this auction. Minor fold separation is to be expected, but the poster otherwise presents remarkably well.
