1888 N332 S. F. Hess Frank Hart (Pedestrian/Negro League) SGC 40 VG 3. NOTE: An edit not affecting any facts presented was made to the description.

    From a newly discovered collection.
Six-day long marathons or endurance racing was the craze in the United States and Great Britain in the late-1870s and early-1880s. Participants or "pedestrians" walked and/or ran on an indoor track for basically as long as they could stand. Fans of the sport were very passionate and there are reports of those placing bets on their favorite. Frank Hart (1858-1908) was one of the best of his day. His real name was Fred Hichborn but as a pedestrian he went by Frank Hart. The O'Leary Belt winner was a world record holder who went 565 miles in six days. The $17,000 in prize money, a huge amount in 1880, equals over $410,000 in 2018 dollars. Hart was so admired his fan based crossed the racial barrier but times being what they were, he was called "Black Dan" for his business connections with Irish pedestrian/promoter Dan O'Leary. Hart won the Rose Belt in December 1879 in front of a packed crowd in Madison Square Garden. After his walking career ended, he was a professional baseball in a Chicago Negro League. Hart died in Chicago in 1908. Graded SGC 40 VG 3. This is the only example to be found on the SGC or PSA census reports!
