UPDATE: Please note that the inscription on verso has been determined to be that of Lavigne's manager Sam Fitzpatrick, and is not penned in the hand of Lavigne as described.

1895 George Lavigne Signed Cabinet Photograph. George (Kid) Lavigne was a lightweight fighter who earned the nickname the "Saginaw Kid" when he began fighting at the ripe old age of sixteen out of his Michigan hometown of the same name. Lavigne fought some of the best men in his weight class and put together an impressive string of victories that earned him a title shot against englishman Dick Burge in 1896. Lavigne won a decisive seventeenth-round TKO victory and went on to defend the title several times before finally losing it in a rematch with Frank Erne, who defeated him over twenty rounds on July 3, 1899. This cabinet photo measures 4.25x6.5" and pictures Lavigne and his manager, Sam Fitzpatrick. On the reverse is an inscription in Lavigne's 10/10 blank ink hand that reads, "To W.C. Ryder with kind regards from George Lavigne & Sam Fitzpatrick, New York, May 18 - 95." There is slight edge wear, with a touch more to the corners, and light soiling around the borders. The image remains crisp and clear and displays very well. LOA from Craig Hamilton / JO Sports.
