Description

The Earliest Known Rocky Marciano Boxing Trophy. With historical relevance in stark contrast to its physical stature, this unassuming little trophy marks the first step in a long march that ended with retirement as the only undefeated Heavyweight Champion in the history of the professional prize ring. It is well-documented that Marciano, born Rocco Francis Marchegiano, got his first taste of the sweet science as a twenty-year old Army enlistee with the 150th Combat Engineers stationed in Swansea, Wales, with whom he worked ferrying military supplies across the English Channel for the Normandy invasion and its aftermath. Sources have claimed Rocky took up boxing as an escape from kitchen duty, and clearly he quickly showed a particular skill for the sport.

We find evidence of that youthful skill here, a five-inch tall prize featuring a figural boxer on top and and engraved plaque on the black wooden base that reports, "R.F. Marchegiano, 150th C-E, 1943-44." A degree of expected handling wear to the painted base of the seminal relic is to be expected, but there are no structural problems, and certainly not a thing that could undermine the enormous historical importance and appeal. Unquestionably the most significant Marciano artifact to surface in recent memory.
