Description

From the personal collection of legendary boxing writer Bert Sugar

Mid-1960's Muhammad Ali Original Artwork by LeRoy Neiman. One was the greatest Heavyweight Champion ever to step through the ring ropes. The other was the most famous artist in America, and unquestionably the most revered painter in the history of sports art. Each was an unrepentant iconoclast, groundbreaking, unparalleled in his chosen field of endeavor, a great American success story serving as inspiration to millions. Together they created some of the most enduring images in the collecting hobby, from programs to posters to original creations like the presented masterpiece.

The original owner of this distinctive work likewise fits the theme of athletic achievement perfectly, a boxing writer straight out of central casting with a fedora on his head and a half-smoked cigar chomped between his teeth, author of over eight boxing volumes and former editor of Boxing Illustrated and the venerable Ring Magazine. In fact, Bert Sugar joins Ali and Neiman in Canastota immortality, each enshrined for eternity in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

The image, a rather heroic pose of a young Champion near the start of his long march to the pantheon, will likely be familiar to Ali and Neiman fans alike, a design that was featured upon the 1966 Ali vs. Quarry on-site poster and that commanded $33,460 in watercolor format in our 2014 New York Platinum Night auction. Like the earlier offering, this work utilizes watercolor paper as its foundation but colored marker as its medium, the aggressive strokes and bold color palette ably evoking the Neiman mystique. Neiman boldly autographs the work at Ali's left leg. Artwork is framed behind plexiglass in a simple, unadorned style, affixed with a "Bert Sugar Collection" holographic authentication sticker on reverse. Dimensions 18x24". Fine condition. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
