Description
Circa 1980 Muhammad Ali Training Worn Trunks.Any true Ali fan would recognize this white satin with black trim styling from one hundred yards away, the same look the iconic pugilist sported in the Rumble and the Thrilla. The presented pair dates to the early 1980's when the career of the greatest Heavyweight of all was winding to a close. Wear is light but clearly evident, indicative of the generous Champ's habit of giving away his gear to fans with great regularity.
Any Ali expert worth his salt is aware that this "Everlast" format with the "Made Expressly for Muhammad Ali" text on the central tag was available only to the Greatest himself, but this garment is further supported by a letter of provenance from the original owner, who writes:
"Back in the late 1970's [or] early 1980's, I visited the Deer Lake Training Camp where Muhammad Ali trained. I lived and still reside within fifteen minutes of the camp. While Ali was sparring, he tore this specific pair of trunks. He exited the ring and disappeared into the dressing room. Moments later he appeared wearing a new pair of trunks and then proceeded to throw these into the trash where I promptly removed them. I have had these in my personal collection ever since."
The trunks exhibit the tear mentioned in the letter, at the left hip, and brown staining throughout from sweat and storage. But any article worn in the ring by the greatest legend of the sport is far too significant to be diminished by such concerns.
