Circa 1974 Muhammad Ali Signed Robe Worn in Training for Joe Frazier II Bout. "The Fight of the Century" had lived up to its billing at Madison Square Garden in March of 1971, but that first professional defeated gnawed at Ali for nearly three years before he was granted to opportunity to avenge the loss in a title bout on the same Big Apple proving grounds. Though the January 28, 1974 unanimous decision in Ali's favor was not without controversy, the tie score would set the stage for the greatest rubber match in boxing history, the historic "Thrilla in Manila."Ali notates this satin robe in his classic black on white format with the words, "From the Joe Frazier Fight," but footage from the bout finds the legendary pugilist wearing a very similar but slightly different style, leading boxing collectibles expert Craig Hamilton to deem this a training model. The robe exhibits solid wear and announces "Muhammad Ali" in bold block lettering on verso, the black tackle twill apparently replacing identical text that once resided there, as the stitching path of that earlier identifier remains.
