    Description

Circa 1970 "Turkey Point" Billy Smith Bronze Sculpture by Samuel Murray. Commanding work in bronze is that of Samuel Murray, student of famous painter Thomas Eakins, who used Philadelphia featherweight "Turkey Point" Billy Smith for his famous 1899 painting "Between Rounds," currently on display at the Philadelphia Art Museum. Murray quite clearly attended the modeling session to use his teacher's subject as his own for this thirty-inch-tall (30") work, which is signed "Murray Copyright 1899" on the base, but was likely cast in the late 1960's. The greenish-gray patina of the work is gorgeous, similar in appearance to oxidized copper. Base measures 6.5x17x2.5", and total weight is approximately fifty pounds (50 lbs.). One of five sculptures cast from Murray's mold.
