Description
Circa 1914 Jack Johnson Signed Postcard. Rare and exceptional keepsake with a London postmark dates to the first black Heavyweight Champ's self-imposed European exile to avoid incarceration following his 1913 conviction under the Mann Act. The postcard identifies Johnson as "World's Champion," and his 10/10 black ink inscription, "Yours Truly, Champion Jack Johnson," likewise indicates that the autograph predates his controversial 1915 loss of the title to Jess Willard in Havana. The verso of the postcard features more writing entirely in the hand of this iconic pugilist, who addresses the mailer and writes, "Thinking this better than one you sent have taken the liberty to exchange yours for this one in case you prefer the other drop me a line J.A.J." All Johnson signed material is considered highly desirable within the collecting community, but that tiny percentage dating to his Heavyweight Championship reign stands shoulders above the rest. All ink is 9/10 or better, and the postcard exhibits mild handling wear but no distracting flaws. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.Auction Info
