Circa 1890's Tommy Ryan Oversized Cabinet Photograph. Tommy Ryan is regarded by most boxing historians as one of the greatest middleweight and welterweight Champions of all time. Ryan was an intelligent boxer who combined skillful ring techniques with powerful punching to become one of the dominant fighters of his era. Over a twenty-year career Ryan amassed a record of 88 (70 ko's) wins - 5 losses - 10 draws. He won the welterweight title in 1894 at the age of twenty-four years and later became the middleweight Champion, a title he held for eight years, from 1898 to 1906. During this time he fought all the leading contenders including "Mysterious" Billy Smith, "Nonpareil" Jack Dempsey, Charles (Kid) McCoy, Jack Bonner and "Philadelphia" Jack O'Brien. Featured in this lot is an outstanding oversized cabinet photo of Ryan in his prime that measures 7.5x13". There is general edge wear and tack holes in each corner. The photo surface has small scratches and light scuffs. On the blank bottom border, just below the image, someone has inscribed, "Tommy Ryan, Welter Weight Champion of the World."
