    Description

Circa 1890's Charley Mitchell Oversized Cabinet Photograph. Charles Watson Mitchell was born in Birmingham, England in 1861. He was an intelligent, crafty fighter, who often fought much larger opponents. Actually a middleweight by stature, usually weighing in around 150 pounds, the plucky Mitchell often fought the leading heavyweight contenders of his era. His most famous opponent was the legendary John L. Sullivan. The two met twice in the ring. Sullivan won the first match on May 14th, 1893 by a TKO in the third round. After this fight Mitchell and his supporters taunted Sullivan in the press. The two met again while Sullivan was on a European tour in Chantilly, France on March 10th, 1888. The clever Mitchell insisted on a large, outdoor ring where he would have room to maneuver away from Sullivan's sledgehammer blows. Mitchell went down several times during the match, but managed to avoid a knockout blow. Rain brought a halt to the match thirty-nine rounds and the fight was declared a draw. This non-victory haunted Sullivan for the rest of his life and he could often be heard referring to Mitchell as a "bombastic sprinter." This oversized cabinet photo measures 7.5x13". There is edge wear, corner tack holes, smudge marks and light soiling. The photo area remains strong, as does Mitchell's image.
