    Description

Circa 1860 John C. Heenan Lithograph. The perfect companion piece to the Tom Sayers lithograph likewise presented within this auction is this wonderful portrait study of "The Benicia Boy," the American Champion widely considered to have been the true victor of the famed battle with Sayers despite the official ruling of a draw due to a near riot and subsequent police intervention that ended the bout. The 18.5x22" work exhibits expected toning and soiling at the edges, but the marvelous 19th century graphics cannot be overcome by such issues.
