Description

19th Century John L. Sullivan Tobacco Advertising Sign. One of the earliest display signs relating to sports memorabilia collecting you'll ever find, and what a piece to claim that honor! The great bare knuckle Champion assumes a classic fighting pose for this large (12x17") cardboard sign meant to inspire the purchase of "Gail & Ax Navy and Blue Ribbon Tobacco." It instructs "Send us 10 wrappers and secure Free one of these elegant photos (unmounted) with no advertising on it." Though a degree of wear is visible on verso, the front has come through the years extraordinarily well, with only very light edge wear and rounded corners to suggest its advanced age. An elegant matting and framing job will turn this scarce piece into a museum quality display. One of the largest vintage images we've ever seen of this monumental boxing figure.
