Description

1985 Mike Tyson Professional Debut Fight Worn & Signed Left-Hand Boxing Glove with Notarized Letter from Recipient. The most terrifying puncher in the history of the Heavyweight division usually knocked the senses out of his victims with blows to the head, but it was brutal body shots that brought a swift end to Iron Mike's first professional contest as he began his inexorable march toward the title. Hector Mercedes absorbed a frightening pummeling to his ribs before going down to one knee and watching the referee begin his count before he realized that Mercedes was not fit to continue and waving off further combat at 1:47 of the first round.

Our consignor was at the Empire State Convention Center in Albany on March 6, 1985 to witness the one-sided assault, and provides a detailed and notarized letter of provenance we'll transcribe in full here:

"I have lived in Grapeville, New York my entire life. In the early 80's, a friend of mine began telling me about a young boxer who was training in the Catskill Gym on Main Street under Cus D'Amato. We stopped by several times to watch him spar. When it was announced that Mike Tyson would fight his first professional match at the Empire State Plaza, we purchased tickets.

The date was March 6th, 1985. It was a short fight. A TKO in the first round. After they cut the gloves off Mike, he threw them into the audience and his left glove landed in my lap. I went up to ringside and he autographed the inside of his glove. I was prod to be able to witness an important and exciting night in the history of boxing."

Check out the fight footage on Youtube and you'll see it was the left hand that finished the bout, two thundering hooks to the ribs. You'll also note the unusual color format of the "Everlast" gloves Tyson wore--red with black palms, perfectly matching the offered specimen. Tyson's early autograph format appears in 9/10 ink at interior wrist. Certainly the most important Tyson artifact that Heritage has had the opportunity to present to the collecting community. Notarized letter of provenance from original recipient. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
