Description

1976 Drew "Bundini" Brown Cornerman's Jacket Worn for Muhammad Ali vs. Antonio Inoki Bout. Consigned along with the robe The Greatest wore into the ring at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan Arena to meet martial artist Antonio Inoki, this matching design originally belonged to Drew "Bundini" Brown, Ali's closest confidante and innovator of the immortal slogan, "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

Most of the elite Ali fight collectibles traded in the sports collectibles marketplace derive from the late 1980's sale of Brown's abandoned storage locker, the discovery of which is our hobby's closest counterpart to the discovery of King Tut's tomb. Our past offerings of Ali's Championship belt ($358,500) and his trunks from the Thrilla in Manila ($155,350) were among the Brown storage locker contents.

The Inoki fight gear presented in this Platinum Night event likewise bear that provenance, as detailed in the included letter of examination by top hobby expert Craig Hamilton. He confirms that these garments match film and photography from the bout.

Like Ali's robe, this "Everlast" brand jacket is crafted from white satin with red trim, bearing the owner's name over the heart and a butterfly and bee patch on left and right sleeves respectively. Bold text on verso supplies the full slogan: "Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee, Ali." Fine condition, with no condition flaws of note. LOA from Craig Hamilton. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
