Description

1975 Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier "The Thrilla in Manila" Original Artwork by LeRoy Neiman. One was the greatest Heavyweight Champion ever to step through the ring ropes. The other was the most famous artist in America, and unquestionably the most revered painter in the history of sports art. Each was an unrepentant iconoclast, groundbreaking, unparalleled in his chosen field of endeavor, a great American success story serving as inspiration to millions. Together they created some of the most enduring images in our shared aesthetic history.

Neiman captures his favorite subject in the midst of the most fearsome conflict of his storied career, a brutal war of attrition in Southeast Asia that served as the rubber match between Ali and "Smokin' Joe" Frazier. We can definitively assign the work to the last of the storied rivalry by the colors of the fighters' trunks.

The original watercolor on paper is enhanced by black marker, which the legendary artist uses to sign the work at lower left. Dimensions are 15x11", framed to 21x17". This is the most significant original Neiman featuring Ali that we have offered since an oil on canvas picturing action from "The Rumble in the Jungle" commanded $119,500 in our February 2016 Platinum Night event. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
