Description

1975 Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier III (Thrilla in Manila) Full Ticket. Tickets and programs from Ali's two great foreign bouts, Zaire's "Rumble in the Jungle" and the Philippines' "Thrilla in Manila" are all but non-existent in the hobby, as very few made the journey back across the ocean to American shores.

Surviving in its untorn state due only to its former ownership by a sports writer who was able to enter the arena with his press credentials, this oversized (4x8.5") ticket for the October 1, 1975 bout for a ringside seat would have granted the bearer a third row view of this titanic battle. In a display of brutal punishment and unmatched toughness and heart more suited for a Rocky flick than an actual Heavyweight Championship bout, these two legends pummeled each other four fourteen rounds before trainer Eddie Futch refused to allow Frazier to answer the bell for the fifteenth and final round, fearing for his boxer's life. Ali later commented that it was the closest he too had ever come to death in the ring, declaring Frazier as the second greatest fighter in boxing history.

While solely by virtue of the bout's status as one of the boxing's most important and dramatic, this full ticket should be viewed as a genuine treasure. But when pairing this fact with the overwhelming scarcity of the piece, it gains the status of one of the most significant tickets of the sweet science to be offered for public sale.

The ticket has a light vertical center fold, a necessity due to its large size (4.25x8.5") that would have overwhelmed a standard pocket or wallet, and some patches of tape residue on verso from having been pasted into a scrapbook. But as the catalog image will clearly illustrate, the ticket presents as essentially NRMT, with no tearing or staining. Imagine, an unused third row seat to the Thrilla in Manila! Now all we need is a time machine.
