Description

1975 Muhammad Ali Fight Worn Mouthpiece from "The Thrilla in Manila." If you're looking for a reading on the temperature of the current Ali market, we'd direct your attention to the February 2014 price realized in our Platinum Night auction for the gloves worn by the young Louisville Lip to claim his first Heavyweight Championship, a hefty yet entirely reasonable $836,500. While gloves and trunks have always dominated the fight market, this mouthpiece clenched between the gritted teeth of Ali during what was certainly the most difficult, and arguably the greatest, fight of his career should be considered one of the most significant Ali offerings in recent memory.

For fourteen rounds in the boiling heat of Southeast Asia, these two iconic Heavyweight Champions waged a war of brutal attrition, Frazier withstanding Ali's deft and elusive early glovework, never slowing his forward progress, never going down. Ali had hoped and expected to make it a quick fight, certain that Frazier's recent decisive loss to Foreman was an indication of his decline. "Joe, they told me you was all washed up," Ali grunted during a seventh-round clinch. "They told you wrong, pretty boy," Frazier growled back.

Though Ali would fight for six more years, and even claim a third Heavyweight title from Michael Spinks in 1978, many pundits consider this October 1, 1975 bout the high water mark of his legendary career, and its brutal nature an invoice upon his health that he continues to pay to this day. The mouth guard derives from the collection of Ali's long time assistant trainer Wali Muhammad, the source of many of the top Ali fight pieces in the hobby today. The "boil and bite" guard bears a perfect imprint of Ali's teeth and bears his surname written in vintage ink. Also here is the container in which it was stored, a period "Noxema" bottle with a strip of tape affixed reading "Ali Fraz 1975." A rare opportunity to own a genuine article of fight worn gear from one of the greatest sporting events of the twentieth century. Letter of provenance from Wali Muhammad family. LOA from Craig Hamilton.
