1973 Muhammad Ali vs. Ken Norton I On-Site Poster.
We have been trained to consider The Thrilla in Manila as Muhammad Ali's greatest exhibition of durability and will, but the stunning upset of the five-to-one favorite at the punishing hands of Ken Norton displayed a similar brand of fortitude. The Greatest was never knocked off his feet by the powerful underdog, but he was badly injured early in the bout, stating after the final bell, "Imagine you have your jaw broken and have to fight ten more rounds."
As with his loss to Joe Frazier, Ali would even the score with Norton in the highly-anticipated rematch, and then claim the rubber match and the series in the pair's third and final meeting, but "The Broken Jaw" fight remains the most celebrated of the three Ali-Norton tilts. And while on-site posters for the 1976 Yankee Stadium finale have surfaced with limited regularity upon the major hobby's auction block, this is the first example from either of the 1973 contests that can make that claim. Experts believe that only three exist.
The 14x22.5" poster celebrates Ali as "The People's Champion," a nickname studded in rhinestones on the robe he wore into the ring that evening, a gift from his friend Elvis Presley. The hometown favorite Norton is identified as number six in the world. Tack holes and minor toning and edge wear do little to distract--this is still an eye-catching beauty. LOA from Craig Hamilton.
