Description
1971 Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier Full Suite of Fifteen Etchings by LeRoy Neiman--Each Signed by Both Boxers and the Artist."The people that love my paintings...they're spectators, not viewers. They look at it for the experience and the re-experience for themselves."
It's a brilliant self assessment from the most famous sports artist of all time, who served as a documentarian just as much as a creator of beauty. In Neiman's chaotic brush strokes lies an honesty that not even photography could convey, and we see that preternatural insight into the athletic experience in this most coveted folio from the Neiman archives.
This suite of fifteen original etchings was produced in a limited edition of just 150, documenting round by round Muhammad Ali's first ever defeat at the gloved hands of Smokin' Joe Frazier, a bout that lived up to its "Fight of the Century" hype. Each print is numbered "3/150" and measures 15x20" in size. Each likewise bears the 9+/10 pencil autographs of both combatants and the creator himself. Two Frazier signatures are partially traced.
Slight acidification is evident from original matting, with adhesive residue on reverse of each print from the same cause. The effects are minor and could be quite easily remedied by a conservationist if desired. Certainly this is not essential. Otherwise all prints present without distraction, still housed in the custom, gold-embossed folio. We aren't certain how many (if any) of the other 149 sets are fully autographed like the presented rarity, but included copies of photos from the Ali and Frazier signings date to many years after their creation, assuring this was not part of the original production. An exquisite, wall-filling collection that could never be reproduced. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
